At Last, Primary Problem-Solving Mathematical Heuristics Guidebooks That Deliver!
Parents, How Often Have You Seen Maths Assessment Books That Give Only The Final Answers...
Or if workings are shown, you get even more confused about how the solution got from one step to the next?...
The Mastering Heuristics
Book Series
Will handhold your child through each question and their solutions. He or she will be able to apply these techniques โ easily and efficiently!
This means that your child will be able to tackle tricky, unfamiliar PSLE Math questions, and even have time left over to check through their exam paper.
With The Mastering Heuristics Book Series, your child will be ready and confident for the PSLE Maths Exam!
The ๐ astering Heuristics Book Series is the brainchild of Sunny Tan, founder of Maths Heuristicsยฎ๏ธ.
While as a teacher with Singaporeโs Ministry of Education, Sunny noticed that there was a big gap in parents and students' understanding of Maths Heuristics.
Though these Maths Heuristics are listed in the PSLE syllabus and commonly tested in the exams, the use of heuristics is not easily found in many math books.
Sunny realised this was a problem because being able to apply these Maths Heuristics are crucial for students to tackle tricky, unfamiliar PSLE Math Problem Sums.
Without understanding Maths Heuristics, when students face tricky PSLE Math problem sums, they will get โstuckโ, โbomb the answerโ or in the worst case, leave the question blankโฆ making them lose a lot of marks in the exam.
But equipped with Maths Heuristics, students are able to solve these tricky PSLE Math problem sums easily and achieve their AL1 for PSLE Mathsโฆ even if itโs their first time encountering an unfamiliar question!
The Series captures Sunnyโs simple, systematic, yet powerful techniques which helps students easily and quickly learn and apply Mathematical Heuristics.
What Other Books Do...
Most assessment books and guidebooks do one of two things...
Some books simply give the final answers.
Students have to keep guessing and trying until they find how the answers were derived.
This is time-consuming and frustrating for your child!
How many times do they have to keep trying until they figure things out?
Other books show only the brief workings โ
This is a little better than just showing the final answers.
But how often have you as a parent tried to follow the authorโs explanations, and how the author got from one step to another... only to realise you don't understand what they're doing?
Without illustrating each step involved in the workings, parents end up having to figure out for themselves how the author got from one step to another.
You then either spend time figuring things out and still end up wondering if you are teaching your child correctly, or give up totally and leave it to a tutor.
Example:
Some books simply give final answers.
Company S has 1000 buses now
Other books show only the workings.
5:1 => 5:10
(10 - 1) u = 9 u
9 u = 900 buses
1 u = (900 รท 9) buses = 100 buses
10 u=(100 x 10) buses = 1000 buses
What This Series Does...
The Mastering Heuristics Book Series will show the short workings and their corresponding longer explanations.
Short workings show application -
How the techniques make solutions simpler, shorter and quicker, saving time for harder questions.
Students better at Maths may be able to understand these short workings.
Corresponding long workings explain the application -
How one step leads to the next.
Students who are still learning to tackle Maths โ as well as parents and even tutors โ will be able to follow the process of solving Maths questions.
Example:
Short Workings Show Application.
Using the techniques, solutions are simpler, shorter and quicker.
This saves time for harder questions.
Corresponding Long Workings Explain The Application.
Parents and students can follow with ease how one step leads to the next.
And That's Not All.
This Series Offers Parents And Students The Opportunity To "Look Into The Mind Of The PSLE Exam Setter"
You and your child will learn and understand the thought process behind how to tackle tricky PSLE problem sums, so you will never be โstuckโ again.
The Mastering Heuristics Book Series comprises of separate books for different mathematical heuristics to facilitate focused learning of each.
With just the Unit Transfer Method alone, your child can tackle 90% of Maths questions involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios and percentages.
Model Drawing
Is important for visual learners โ and most students are visual learners.
Spatial Visualisation
Helps students see figures in different perspectives to tackle challenging area and perimeter questions
Speed & Rate
Requires cross application of techniques, hence these are taught separately.
Within each book, the technique and its application methods are taught by type of questions (Chapters).
Because the technique is systematically built upon chapter to chapter, your child will very quickly grasp the concept and application of these techniques.
With each subsequent chapter, your childโs pace of learning will become increasingly faster.
And most importantly, your child will be able to read a question and quickly know the appropriate method to apply.
Parents, as you may already know - From 2021, the (AL) grading system replaces the old T-score system.
Under the new AL scoring system, each PSLE student will be scored using eight ALs, with AL 1 being the highest score and AL 8 being the lowest.
At the highest possible grade, there is no change. Scoring 91 marks and above gets you the A* (Until 2020) and AL1 (From 2021).
The key changes that impact nearly all students are in the next upper band and the lower band.
Scoring 75 โ 89 marks used to get you an A (Until 2020).
Now, the quality of the A matters because the grades are further divided into 3 bands โ AL2, AL3 and AL4.
To score well to be in the upper AL bands, every mark counts.
The new AL Scoring System looks at a studentโs actual performance, without any adjustments.
Score below expectations, there is no moderation, no bell curve to fall back on.
To achieve AL1, knowing basic computation & applying formulas is not enough.
The differentiating factor now is whether your child is equipped to solve unfamiliar challenges.
This is where heuristics come into play.
Heuristics is simply a tool โ comprising various problem-solving techniques โ for solving higher-order problems.
Now, the more skillful your child is at using heuristics techniques, the higher the grade he/she can attain.
There are 5 standalone books in the Mastering Heuristics Book Series.
You can choose the specific ones you would like your child to start with.
Otherwise, learning and practising through the entire set will fortify your childโs readiness and confidence towards their Maths Exams.
Unit Transfer Method for P4
The Unit Transfer Method is used to tackle questions involving whole numbers, decimals and fractions at Primary 4.
Learn to systematically extract all the given information, tabulate them, and solve the question from one view โ the table.
No more missed information.
Easy and quick, saving precious time to tackle tougher questionsโฆ
This book teaches the Unit Transfer Method at Primary 4 level, and prepares students to use Unit Transfer Method for more challenging questions at Primary 5 & 6 levels.
Unit Transfer Method for P5&6
This simple technique alone can be used to solve 90% of PSLE Maths questions involving whole numbers, decimals, ratios, percentages and fractions.
